This is QLD’s interview with Angela Davis, a sultry Motown singer bringing beautiful music to an ear near you. We interviewed the rising star to see how she started and where she’s going.
How long have you been singing and what has inspired you?
I have been singing since I was about 2 or 3 years old. I was inspired to sing after hearing great artists like Anita Baker, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Regina Bell, and Luther Vandross and my Uncle Calvin playing, singing and writing songs.
What has been the most exciting experience since your career has started?
Since my career has started some exciting experiences for me have been Singing background for Alexander O’Neal and Cherelle at Chene Park, Winning the 2015 WDIV/Channel 4 Super Singer Competition, opening up for The Beach Boys and The Temptations at Freedom Hill, performing on Live TV during America’s Thanksgiving Parade, and singing the National Anthem at (my Alma Mater) a University of Michigan basketball game at Crisler Center . GOD is and has truly been good to me.
Do you have any upcoming events, releases or albums? Please describe them.
I will be hosting a Spotlight Open Mic Series at The Music Hall Jazz Cafe on Wednesday, March 16, 2016 7pm $10 cover. I’m excited to host an event to help give up and coming artists a platform to showcase their talents. In addition, I get the honor of being one of the special guest performers at the Grand Opening of The Jazz Underground performance venue in Warren, MI on April 2, 2016 with The Epic Movement band.
I’ve also just launched my VLog called: Angela Davis: Up Close & Personal via YouTube and Facebook. It’s a short show where I feature local entrepreneurs and sing short tributes to artists that inspire me. I do a new episode every week.
I perform every Tuesday with 313 The Live Experience at The Historic Baker’s Keyboard Lounge 8pm $10 cover. I have original music available on iTunes, Amazon.com, and Google Play. My 1st album is titled “Flying High” and my second EP is titled “Now I Know”.
What do you love about the City of Detroit?
I love the culture of Detroit. It’s rugged, eccentric, artistic, blossoming, and busy all at once. I especially love the music culture in Detroit. There are so many different cool venues/restaurants (Floods, Baker’s, They Say, Cliff Bells, etc…), that offer great food, music, and ambiance. Most importantly they offer artists a platform to share their gifts.
Best place to be in Detroit on a beautiful day and why?
The best place on a beautiful day is the Detroit River Walk. You get a beautiful view, sunshine, and can get a great workout in.
