I grew up on Schoolcraft

Cozy red house in the middle of the block

Long summers on the front porch

I lived with my whole family

Friends were cousins that lived down the street

There was a lady who reported the news across from me

Block club, where neighbors were friendly and cared about their grass

Not one vacant house on the block

Come in with the street lights on that’s your ass

Detroit Roller Wheels 6-10 on a Saturday night

Mammoth around the corner

Leddy’s a straight shot down Rutherford

We all went to Dossin

Cashing in bottles just to get chips and a pop from the corner store

We knew the shooters

We knew the wino’s

We knew the hoe’s

We knew the new people

We knew the bad kid’s

We knew who really had money

And knew who really didn’t

The neighborhood was your extended family

And outsider’s stayed in their place

I grew up on Schoolcraft
