Location: Bicoastal, Virginia/Detroit
Name of Business: Twine & Toil
Can you tell us a little about the nature of your business?
Twine & Toil is a wedding and event floral design company that specializes in providing unique garden style flower arrangements to the client who wants their event to be a natural reflection of who they are. I provide everything from floral chandeliers for the upscale bride to beautiful arches full of Ivy leaves for the rustic wedding. While there are some limits on what flowers will do, I try to push those limitations with each design.
How did you come up with the name “Twine & Toil”?
How I came up with my business name: I’m a huge Halloween and Horror movie fan and I knew I wanted to somehow include that theme in my business name without it being too obvious. The Halloween theme that kept popping in my head was “Double, Double Toil and Trouble”. So I chose Toil, because it also describes the work I put into my business, and looked for another term that was floral related. Twine just flowed so easily with it and that’s how Twine & Toil was born.
What inspired you to open your own floral design company?
What inspired me to open my business was the need to be my own boss. Starting a business didn’t just fall in my lap. I have been on the pursuit for years to figure out what my purpose and talents were and how to turn that into a business because I knew I would never be happy working for someone else. Being able to constantly work on new projects, being creative with my hands and not having someone else determine how much money I deserve to make in a year were major drivers for me. Making floral arrangements started as a hobby for me, but after taking some professional classes I started to see the business opportunity in it and I dove in headfirst and have not looked back.
What do you love most about your business?
I love that there is so much variety and autonomy. Each event is so different and unique that I never get bored. There are sooooo many potential designs to create that I don’t think I could do them all even in my lifetime.
I know that you’re bicoastal but what do you love most about the City of Detroit?
What I love about the city of Detroit is that there is so much drive here. I remember when I was growing up young people my age had their own hustles braiding hair, selling candy and doing whatever they needed to do to live out their dreams. That was my first introduction into doing things outside the box.
It’s a beautiful day in Detroit, where’s the best place for you to be?
The best place for me to be in Detroit on a beautiful day is in my grandmothers backyard barbecuing with all my family, because at the end of the day that’s what makes it home for me. The laughs and the love.
